Miatta Fahnbulleh

Until December 2023, Chief Executive, New Economics Foundation, currently a prospective parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party. 

Miatta has a wealth of experience in developing and delivering policy to empower communities and change people’s lives. She has been at the forefront of generating new ideas on reshaping our economy inside government and out. Her work has included the development of policies from devolution to local economic growth, housing, energy and climate change and transport, driving forward the Government’s economic devolution agenda in England, and localism and local economic growth. Miatta has a PhD in economic development.

Economic Ministerial Advisory Board, providing expert advice on economic policy issues to the Welsh Government.

Miatta was appointed to this new Board in March 2022. The Board will provide external advice to the Welsh Government on specific economy-related matters, by identifying both current and future economic challenges and opportunities to develop Wale’s economy and help it to thrive.

Along with formulating advice and presenting it to Ministers, Board members will discuss policy ideas and act as a sounding board for future policy development – offering robust challenge and testing out key policies where appropriate.

Greater Manchester Independent Inequalities Commission 

Miatta was a member of the Commission set up to explore the root causes and drivers of inequality and offer solutions to tackle these issues across Greater Manchester.

With a diverse membership of eminent thinkers and doers, the Independent Inequalities Commission will draw upon evidence of the existing and emerging inequalities in the city-region. It will make specific, hard-hitting and deliverable recommendations for action to improve the lives of residents across Greater Manchester. Read the report here.

Croydon Climate Crisis Commission

Miatta chaired the Croydon Climate Crisis Commission. The Commission is formed from a partnership between Croydon Council and the New Economics Foundation.

The independent body was set up to tackle the climate and ecological emergency and will draw on findings of a new citizens’ assembly on ways to lower the borough’s carbon footprint.
