A report on The Crown Estate’s Total Contribution to the UK

NEF Consulting worked with the Crown Estate on their first Total Contribution report, an innovative new method for reporting on sustainable business.

The report is a major step towards integrating sustainability into the heart of their business model. The methodology used in the report, developed by NEF Consulting, is designed to be used to encourage more businesses in the UK to look at their impacts and the influence they have, and use the information to help develop a sustainable approach to business.

Key findings showed the following combined total of direct, indirect and enabled contribution:

  • The Crown Estate supported 94,000 jobs
  • Contributed £5,233 million to the UK economy (gross value)
  • Averted 4m tCO2e of carbon through activities on our portfolio.

Mark Gough, Head of Sustainability at the Crown Estate, said: “For us, Total Contribution is the next step in understanding the broader contribution we deliver to the UK. Developing this new approach has helped us explore our role as a land manager and the responsibility and influence this brings and it will be invaluable in ensuring we continue to drive a sustainable, commercially successful business.”

Lois Guthrie, Technical Director at the International Integrated Reporting Council said: “Companies are exploring the short, medium and long-term value they create and how best to report this to stakeholders. As one of the IIRC’s Pilot Programme participants, The Crown Estate is at the forefront of this thinking and through its Total Contribution report it is progressing the understanding of what is material to sustainable business.”

Stewart Wallis, Director of NEF (New Economics foundation) and founding Board Member of NEF Consulting, who supported the development of the methodology, said: “Businesses of the future will be judged on their total impact – environmental, social and economic. This report breaks vital new ground in measuring Total Contribution. It is excellent to see The Crown Estate showing the way forward.”

A Green New Deal
A plan for government-led investment to reduce the carbon we emit and boost nature, while creating a new generation of jobs.

The democratic economy
To devolve state power and transform ownership of the economy to give everyone an equal stake in the places where we live and work.
